The Profile of Development College of Jilin Agricultural University
Development College of Jilin Agricultural University (DCJAU) is an independent 
college, which was cooperatively established by Jilin Agricultural University and Jilin Donghua Education Corporation with the confirmation of Ministry of Education of China in May, 2000. The college is located on the bank of Shuangyang Lake, the southern garden of the charming city---Changchun.
DCJAU sticks to the principle of “making efforts to educate talent intellectuals for the society”, with the initiatives of “establishing the qualified college, developing the college with talent intellectuals, strengthening the college with special features and administrating the college in scientific ways”, aiming at “educating highly qualified talent intellectuals with practical abilities”.
To meet the need of the market, the college consolidates 
the development of disciplines. It offers 27 majors for undergraduate students, covering 34 directions, and 12 majors for vocational school students. These majors are in the fields of agriculture, science, engineering, pharmaceutics, administration, arts, etc. There are more than 10,000 students altogether at present.
The college boasts its following excellent conditions for the operation. It now 
covers an area of 83 hectares, including a construction area of 28,000 km2, and the facilities are worth as much as over 40 million RMB. There are over 80 laboratories, a gymnasium with the capacity of 6,000 people, a well-equipped library with, an educational information center, a radio station, a TV station and large electronic reading-rooms with 320 computers, as well as the campus internet system available. A highly qualified team of faculty has been set up with both full-time and part-time teachers, over 50% of whom are professors or associate professors. Moreover, more than 70 practical training bases outside campus have been established in the cities of Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Changchun, and provinces of Shangdong, Heilongjiang, Jilin，etc. Furthermore, “China Changchun CEO Club”, consisting of managers from 50 companies, has been set up to bridge the cooperation between the college and enterprises, with the combination of producing, studying and researching.
The optimum-oriented teaching system has been fashioned. For the theoretical teaching, the platform and module have been formed with the target of
cultivating students’ abilities; for the practical training, there have been combinations of experiments, training with practice and producing, learning with researching. A testing mode has also been formed for strengthening the monitoring of learning process, by way of regular tests and application ability tests in combination with final assessment. The instruction, teaching methods and modes will be gradually reformed. The education and management system of students’ affairs, as well as the monitoring system for quality education by Jilin Agricultural University, Donghua Education Corporation and DCJAU itself have been established and perfected.
The students are organized to be involved in the certification of OSTA (Occupational Skill 
Testing Authority) and NOSTB (National Occupational Skill Testing Base) established by the Authority of Provincial Labor & Social Security Department, which have been appointed as the designated bases for the vocational training of Jilin provincial tourism. Until now, over 25 occupational certifications have been available, such as E-business specialist, computer engineer, certified public accountant, logistician, project manager, Microsoft authentication, tour guide, etc. There are more than 8,000 students who have obtained the certificates. In 2004, student Xie Di majoring in computer sciences, participated in “National E-business Contest” and was awarded the silver medal. He was the only medalist from Jilin Province. The occupational certification has enlarged the job fairs for our students.
The system of occupational guidance and employment recommendation has been set up. “The intellectual fair” for college students has been established, which keeps contact
with companies both in Jilin Province and other provinces all the year round. The companies are warmly welcomed to the campus to recruit new employees. The graduates attend all kinds of fairs to hunt jobs under the guidance. Due to the training activities of “Starting a Business”, the “Venture Park” has been set up, and the rate of employment for the graduates in recent three years has mounted up to more than 95%.
DCJAU has accomplished substantial achievements. At the provincial educational conference, 
the leader introduced the operational experience twice, who was the only representative from independent colleges. The education authority of the province has officially designated it as the “pilot institution for the reform in application-oriented undergraduate education”. In 2003, the research project was awarded the second prize for the provincial excellent research achievements. Providing service for the rejuvenation of traditional industrial bases of Jilin Province, it was given credit again by the education authority of province in January, 2005. As the only representative of independent college, the leader gave the presentation on the experience of employment at a provincial conference in June, 2005. During the period of national supervision and assessment for independent colleges, DCJAU was appreciated. The library was regarded as “The Excellent Library”, and our department of students’ affairs was entitled “The Excellent Team” for administration of college students’ affairs in Jilin Province twice and “The Innovation Prize” as well. The website was awarded one of “The 10 Best College Websites in Jilin Province”. In addition, seven courses, such as “Financial Management”, were awarded “The Provincial Excellent Courses”.
DCJAU is getting into its stride towards the goal of excellent college in China with its own characteristics, under the inspiration of “Striving for Excellence and Surpassing Itself”.
